30/09/2017 (Gulf Times – Qatar): French President Emmanuel Macron has invited Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to visit Paris on Thursday, saying the aim is to calm tensions after the deeply divisive Kurdish independence referendum. In a statement, the presidency said France wanted to ‘help Iraq to stop tensions from setting in’ following the vote on Monday, which saw Iraqi Kurdistan overwhelmingly support secession. In a phone call on Wednesday, ‘Macron stressed the importance of preserving the unity and integrity of Iraq while recognising the rights of the Kurdish people. 30/09/2017 (Arab News – KSA): JEDDAH: A new anti-harassment law has won praise from across Saudi Arabia after King Salman ordered the interior minister to criminalize sexual harassment. The government has prepared a draft anti-harassment law to be implemented in 60 days, with jail terms and flogging being considered as possible penalties. The move comes just days after a royal decree lifted the driving ban on women. The latest royal decree stated that sexual harassment posed a great threat to women and families, and was “in contradiction of Islamic principles.” The decree read: “Considering the dangers sexual harassment poses and its negative impact on the individual, the family and society along with its contradiction of Islamic principles, our customs and traditions … the ministry shall prepare a draft law to tackle sexual harassment.”..

In contemplating the future, it is important to know exactly what we are talking about. Supporters of the referendum have pinned their flag to two concepts: independence and self-determination. They say Iraqi Kurds want independence. However, like all other Iraqis, Iraqi Kurds already live in a country that is recognized as independent and a full-member of the United Nations. The concept of the quest for independence applies to lands that are part of a foreign empire or turned into “possession” of a colonial power. Legally speaking, at least since 1932, that has not been the case in Iraq…

30/09/2017 (Ahram Online – Egypt): One in 10 Egyptians live abroad, the head of Egypt’s statistics body CAPMAS said Saturday, announcing the result of the latest census at an official ceremony. Abu Bakr El-Gendy said Egypt’s population had reached 104.2 million. Some 94.98 million live within Egypt while 9.4 million live abroad. The figures announced took four years to collate, El-Gendy stated. “Unprecedented mechanisms were utilized in the census to reach its goals,” he added. In March this year, he had his first U.S. solo exhibition at Columbia University’s Arthur Ross Architecture Gallery in New York. Less than five months later, that exhibition has arrived at Studio-X on Istanbul’s Meclis-i Mebusan Caddesi, the quarters of the old Ottoman parliament. 23/09/2017 (Hurriyet – Turkey): Turkey’s National Security Council Meeting (MGK) which convened under President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan ended late on Sept. 22, stressing that the Iraqi Kurdish independence referendum slated for Sept. 25 was illegitimate and unacceptable. “The illegitimacy of the referendum announced by the KRG as on Sept. 25 and its unacceptance was once again specified.
