emFile Photo/em30/04/2017 (Sabah – Turkey): Two paintings, one by Rembrandt and the other by Renoir, have been stolen in northern Italy in a 27-million-euro (29-million-dollar) heist, news reports said Wednesday. Two men paid several visits to an art dealer in Monza, a town in the northern outskirts of Milan, to study the artworks and win the dealer’s confidence, newspaper Il Giorno said. The men eventually asked the dealer to bring the pictures to a luxury property in the center of town to finalize the deal. After a sales agreement was signed but no money had changed hands, the three men celebrated with a round of coffee. The fraudsters then used an excuse to leave the room – they said they needed to pick up a tray for the coffee cups – and disappeared with the paintings. A spokesman for the art heritage squad of the Carabinieri police told dpa he could not comment on the report because of an order from judicial authorities…

On the importance of relations with Vatican, other religions

30/04/2017 (Al Arabiya News – UAE by Abdulrahman al-Rashed*): The Pope’s visit to Egypt was preceded by a critical and hostile campaign. People affiliated with political groups, like the Muslim Brotherhood, are behind these campaigns which were aided by ISIS attacks on two Coptic churches earlier this month.  The Pope insisted on visiting Egypt as scheduled despite all threats. Meanwhile, Al-Azhar sheikh also defied threats made against him and against his institution and publicly received his guest. Actually, the message which extremists want to send through this hateful campaign and through explosions is not directed against the Pope or against Egypt’s Copts but against the Egyptian authority and Arab governments which support it. The underlying message the extremists seek to convey is that they are the decision-makers and will confront any foreign relations with entities that are opposed to them…

Pope urges mediation to end North Korea crisis, avert devastating war

Pope30/04/2017 (Ahram Online – Egypt): Pope Francis said on Saturday a third country, such as Norway, should try to mediate the dispute between North Korea and Washington, to cool a situation that had become “too hot” and posed the risk of nuclear devastation. Francis said he believed “a good part of humanity” would be destroyed in any widespread war. Speaking to reporters aboard the plane taking him back from Cairo, Francis also said he was ready to meet U.S. President Donald Trump when he is in Europe next month but that he was not aware that Washington had made a request for a meeting. In answer to a question about the tensions between the United States and North Korea, Francis said the United Nations should re-assert its leadership in world diplomacy because it had become “too watered down”…

Iraqi violinist plays in Mosul as troops battle ISIL

REUTERS photo22/04/2017 (Hurriyet – Turkey): Amid the bombed-out ruins of an ancient site revered by both Muslims and Christians in Mosul, Iraqi violinist Ameen Mukdad on April 19 held a small concert in the city he was forced to flee by Islamic State militants. As Mukdad played scores he had composed in secret while living under the militants’ austere rule, explosions and gunfire could be heard from Mosul’s western districts where U.S.-backed forces are still battling Islamic State for control. “This is a place for all, not just one sect. Daesh represents no religion but is an ideology that suppresses freedom,” Mukdad told Reuters, using a derogatory name for the militants. “Everything about Daesh is wrong.” Mukdad, 28, fled Mosul after Islamic State fighters stormed his house and confiscated his instruments, deeming his music a violation of their hardline interpretation of Sunni Islam…

Rommel Cave Museum  22/04/2017 (Egypt Indipendent – Egypt): Rommel Cave Museum in Marsa Matruh will resume receiving visitors this summer after a closure of 6 years for renovations and development, Egypt’s Antiquities Ministry said Saturday. The Rommel Cave is one of the natural caves in Marsa Matruh, but the German leader Erwin Rommel used it as his headquarters while conducting the North African wars during World War II. In 1997, the idea came up of turning the cave into a museum and turning it into a tourist destination. A construction company in Matruh province started a month ago on the development work, while a restoration team from the Antiquities Ministry is working on the archeological artifacts in preparation for the opening, said Elham Salah, head of the Museums Department at the Antiquities Ministry…
