Turkish ports ponder expansion as mega ships appear

Turkish ports ponder expansion as mega ships appear10/01/2016 (Anadolu Agencies – Turkey): As ships become larger and transport an increasing amount of goods, seaports are confronted with the task of accommodating the new vessels.Around the world, demand for mega ships has increased in recent years and countries such as Turkey have lacked seaports with the sufficient size and logistics to take them in.Today, the largest ship is about the size of the Empire State building, i.e. 400 meters long or 19,200 TEU – the twenty-foot equivalent unit that is defined throughout the world to describe the capacity of container ships – while it was around 6,600 TEU in 1995.Mega-ships decrease transportation costs by half, accumulating more cargo and saving on fuel and manpower.”Bigger ships always mean more profit,” says Erol Yucel, chairman of Marti Shipping and Ship Management Co. Inc. “They do not have any drawbacks either in economic or environmental aspects.”..
