Foreigners invest $7 billion in Turkish restaurants

Turkey’s gastronomic sector is currently growing much faster than its economy. AA Photo26/10/2014 (Hurriyet – Turkey): Foreign investments have reached $7 billion in Turkey’s restaurant sector over the last seven years, sector representatives have said.
“Some 70 percent of these investments were made in Istanbul, in which there are more than 60 foreign-labeled concept restaurants,” said Ali Tatlıgil, the head of the Association of All Restaurants and Restaurant Suppliers (TÜRES). Istanbul is now in the world’s top 20 cities hosting the most global cuisines. Turkey’s eating and drinking sector is currently growing three times faster than the Turkish economy, said Tatlıgil, adding that the sector’s volume was believed to be worth $10 billion. The sector reached over $20 billion in revenue in 2013, according to official figures from the Economy Ministry. There are more than 40,000 restaurants in the sector, which creates over 500,000 jobs…

Arab League calls for concerted efforts to restore stolen Arab archives

Segretario della Lega araba Nabil al-Araby nel corso della riunione, dopo la cerimonia di teh Documenti Giorno arabo26/10/2014 (Kuna – Kuwait ): CAIRO, Oct 26 (KUNA) — Arab League Secretary General Nabil Al-Araby on Sunday called for concerted efforts to restore Arab archives seized by colonial states during the pre-independence period.In a ceremony organized by the Arab League to mark the Arab Documents Day, Al-Araby said that many Arab countries, especially Palestine, Algeria, Iraq and Libya are struggling to restore their national and cultural archive.He noted that the Israeli occupation forces have stolen over 80,000 Palestinian books and manuscripts after occupying the Palestine.Al-Araby expressed serious concerns about the misuse of the seized documents to distort Arab and Islamic history and heritage.The Arab League chief lauded the great role played by Arab and non-Arab organizations to help bring back the Arab documents and archives in many former colonial countries.

Opposition Leader: People Want Regime Change in Bahrain26/10/2014 (Fars News – Iran): TEHRAN (FNA)- Leader of Bahrain’s Islamic Action (Amal) Society Rashed al-Rashed said opposition parties in Bahrain will boycott parliamentary and municipal elections due to the Al Khalifa regime’s brutality and corruption, stressing that people seek regime change in the tiny Persian Gulf island.”Our main problem in Bahrain is the ruling of the Al Khalifa family not the legitimate demands of the Bahraini people; People are frustrated with the regime’s corruption and brutality,” the Secretary-General of the Islamic Action Society told a press conference held at the venue of the Fars News Agency in Tehran on Sunday.”There is a consensus among political groups, opposition parties and people in Bahrain that the dictatorial regime currently ruling the country has failed to safeguard people’s interests and should be overthrown,” he added.The opposition leader went on to say that the revolutionaries in Bahrain attach great importance to this issue that those who started the revolution should be able to officially form their government and prosecute the corrupt rulers.  Al-Rashed further pointed to the people’s right to decide their own fate, and said, “The Bahraini opposition has been demanding the formation of an independent election commission, which would reflect people’s will.”

Dubai’s 14km-long Jumeirah Corniche is now open

26/10/2014 (Emirates 24/7 – UAE): The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announed the opening of the Jumeirah Corniche – stretching 14 kilometres at the beach overlooking six residential communities starting from the backyard of the Dubai Marine Beach Resort up to Burj Al Arab Hotel.The corniche consists of a 5 metre-wide walk, a 4 metre-wide jogging track, and relaxation areas comprising retail kiosks, shaded benches overlooking the sea, and public hygiene.The project boasts a fascinating scenic view through well looked-after landscaped areas developed and spread in an elegant way together with stylish decorative lighting.Mattar Al Tayer, Executive Director of RTA, was pleased with the completion of this vital project in implementation of the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to bring happiness to people.Al Tayer called on the public and residents of the neighbourhood who fancy walking and jogging to use the Jumeirah Corniche in practising their favourite sports.

Peshmerga to avoid direct conflict in Kobane

26/10/2014 (Al Arabiya – UAE): Iraqi Kurdish forces will not engage in direct combat in the Syrian town of Kobane but will provide artillery support to fellow Kurds fending off Islamic State militants there, Kurdistan Regional Government spokesman Safeen Dizayee told Reuters.The announcement comes as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of neighbouring Turkey said that the main Kurdish party in Syria – whose armed wing is defending Kobane on the ground with the aid of U.S. coalition-led airstrikes – “does not want” Kurdish Peshmerga fighters from Iraq to come to help it fight ISIS in Kobane.Erdogan told Turkish reporters aboard his presidential plane that the Syrian Kurdish party the Democratic Union Party (PYD), which has been leading the defence of Kobane, feared losing its influence in northern Syria when the Peshmerga arrive.

Iran Denies PGCC Chief’s Claim on Interference in Arab States’ Affairs

وزارت خارجه17/10/2014 (Tasnim – Iran): TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An official at Iran’s Foreign Ministry dismissed as “baseless” the recent allegation raised by the secretary general of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC), who has accused Tehran of interfering in the affairs of some Arab countries.“The Islamic Republic’s foreign policy is based on moderation, political rationality, good neighborliness and non-interference in the affairs of the neighboring countries,” the foreign ministry official stated.The official called on countries which have strengthened terrorist groups in the region through their measures as well as financial and political support to make up for their past mistakes and show seriousness in the fight against terrorist groups instead of raising such a divisive remarks.The official also said Iran has played a “constructive role” in the restoration of stability to the Middle East region by adopting a “responsible” behavior toward the regional developments and counter-terrorism…

BUS STOP LIBRARIES TO END COMMUTERS’ TEDIUM

17/10/2014 (Sabah – Turkey): The Municipality of Bağcılar, Istanbul’s most populated district, is offering a novel service for commuters: bus stop libraries. Bookcases placed in bus stops will have a wide selection of books for those looking to spend their leisure time while waiting for the bus. Initially set up in 11 bus stops, the municipality plans to install libraries in others soon. A total of 20,000 books were placed in small libraries since September when they were first introduced and they are being changed with new titles twice a week. Commuters can either read the books at the seated bus stop or borrow it and read it somewhere else. They can return the books to another bookcase at another bus stop.Speaking to A Haber, Bağcılar deputy mayor Mehmet Şirin said Istanbul’s congested traffic made waiting times for buses longer and people sought things to do to kill time…

This is the first exhibition of the 20XX project, which intends to be a long-term series that includes various interdisciplinary works ranging from music to culinary arts, design to fashion.
